Property Council’s Southern Excellence award winners have been announced at a dinner held in Christchurch last week.
The awards recognised eight category winners at the Air Force Museum.
South Island branch president Roger Davidson says Property Council is delighted to celebrate local people who have shown innovation, commitment, and drive in the property industry.
“The individuals and teams we are celebrating tonight are exceptional and we are fortunate to have this level of expertise, skill and passion in our region.
“The awards come at the end of a challenging week that saw earthquakes impact many in the South Island and Wellington. Our thoughts and support are with those affected.
“I am very proud of our region and our ability to withstand and manage ourselves through devastating natural disasters. We have all shown resilience and strength, and the drive and determination needed to progress forward.”
The evening’s top award, Property Council New Zealand Supreme Award for Excellence, was awarded to Sumner Surf Life Saving Club, nominated by Wilson& Hill Architects and Hawkins Construction South Island.
The newly-built Sumner Surf Life Saving Club replaces the original surf club pavilion that was demolished following the 2011 earthquakes.
“The Sumner Surf Life Saving facility is a true representation of what is possible when consultants and a construction firm partner with a community organisation to achieve the best possible outcome.
“With an insurance settlement that only covered 15 per cent of the build cost, the project demonstrated incredible teamwork not only by the construction team but also by the club members and wider community in fundraising and budgeting to achieve a positive result,” says Mr Davidson.
The building’s architects Wilson & Hill Architects were also recognised for their innovative design, receiving the prestigious Buchan Group Urban Design and Architectural Merit Award, while the project team involved, Hawkins Construction South Island & Team, received the WSP PB Best Project Team Award.
Industry stalwart Stephen Collins received the Kirk Roberts Consulting Engineers Award for Service in acknowledgment of his longstanding commitment to the sector and the region’s wider economy.
Mr Collins, who founded his own real estate company, Collins Real Estate in 1972, grew the business to be the biggest in its market before amalgamating with Harcourts in 1985. He is credited for
developing the technology, systems, training, and education programs that grew Harcourts from a 14-office agency to a market leader, conducting over $18 billion dollars in real estate sales every year.
Mr Collins was also recognised for commitment and leadership in the rebuild of Christchurch, being one of the first investors to complete a premium A grade building in the CBD.
Lee Howard, Technical Director at Aurecon in the Built Environment Team, was awarded the Prendos Property Industry Associate of the Year for his ability to successfully drive engagement between the project delivery team and clients, particularly following the earthquakes.
The Greenwood Roche Young Achiever of the Year Award was awarded to Nicholas Yannakis from Powell Fenwick Consultants.
Mr Yannakis, in his role as Technical Director, has worked on a variety of leading projects such as the Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre Redevelopment, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and currently the Metro Sports Facility.
The Resene Outstanding Leadership Award was awarded to Craig Jones from Corbel Construction for his leadership and local community work in ensuring the treatment of the migrant workforce is fair and equitable.
Ryan Croy, New Business Manager for Hawkins Construction South Island, received the Anderson Lloyd Judge’s Choice Award for his drive and passion for the property industry and commitment towards mentoring and leading those who work with him.
