The Facilities Management Association of New Zealand (FMANZ) has opened registrations for its annual flagship event.

FM Summit 2016 will be held at Auckland’s Villa Maria Estate on 4 to 5 May.

Promoted as “a not-to-be-missed opportunity to upskill, network and expand your thinking”, the two-day event consists of one day of seminars, one day of conference presentations, a trade expo showcasing products and services at the cutting edge of facilities management, and a gala dinner and awards presentation hosted by TV personality Jaquie Brown.

The topics on day one include: how big is the facilities management (FM) industry in NZ? Following six months of research, Dutch graduate student Astrid Bruursema will present her hot-off-the press findings on the shape and scale of FM in this country.

“Early indications are that the size of the FM industry here is around $9 billion or just under four percent of GDP,” says FMANZ CEO, Des Brennan. “So, without doubt, the FM industry occupies a significant component of New Zealand’s economy and its contribution to productivity cannot be overstated.”

Other presentations lined up for the seminar day on 4 May illustrate the wide-ranging scope of FM. These include “Valuing FM in Design and Development” by Sarah Ballantyne, SkyCity’s project director for the New Zealand International Convention Centre and Hobson Street Hotel precinct; Graeme Ward on how property is being treated as a strategic priority by Wintec, and why; Stephen Greenhough from WT Partnership on how to manage costs while increasing productivity, performance and service levels; IQP’s Ron Green on why passive fire protection, dubbed “the new leaky building issue”, is so important; EECA’s Dan Coffey on reducing energy costs; and Patrick Homan from Victoria University and Tony Smith from Cushman & Wakefield on the ins and outs of strategic asset management planning amid a total of 12 presentations.

During day two on 5 May summit delegates will hear from six inspirational speakers, all leaders in their field. Dr Grant Schofield, professor of Public Health at AUT and director of the university’s Human Potential Centre, will speak on the topic of workplace wellness; Jennifer Mills, a leading employment and health and safety law expert, will talk about the new Health & Safety at Work Act and what it means for facilities management professionals; Tony Alexander, chief economist with BNZ, will share his insights into the NZ economy; Vincent Heeringa, publisher and co-founder of the NZ Innovator Awards, will talk about innovation in business; and international speaker Alex Lam will explore the new discoveries in personality types and how this knowledge can be applied to better manage people and facilities.

Nanotechnologist and engineer Dr Michelle Dickinson, AKA “Nano Girl”, will close the summit.
