The Frederick Street car park, in Dunedin has been identified as the site of an exciting potential development for the city.
Under a Heads of Agreement approved this week, the Dunedin City Council has unanimously agreed to give the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) an exclusive due diligence period of a year so ACC can assess the development potential of the site.
ACC is considering increasing its operations into a new hub in Dunedin. Over the next year, ACC will investigate the feasibility of constructing a multi-storey building which would include public car parking and office accommodation for potential tenancies by ACC, health and tertiary providers.
Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull says, “This is an exciting opportunity for a major employer in the city to consolidate, and potentially increase, its operations here.
“Both ACC and the DCC are also interested in exploring the opportunity to incorporate a medical hub facility in the development, which would complement the existing components of the medical and tertiary precinct. Car parking will also be part of the mix as will links to public transport.
“It is still very early days. However, the potential for another major development in the central city which will bring jobs and people to Dunedin is yet another sign of the ever-increasing confidence in the city’s economy,” says Mr Cull.
Under the Heads of Agreement, the Council will not discuss or negotiate with any other party relating to the sale and purchase of the property for 12 months.
The open air car park site is bounded by Cumberland, Frederick and Clarendon Streets.
