Mt Maunganui’s Jonathan McAlpine of Thorne Group Architecture was the standout designer at the 2017 Bay of Plenty Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.
Jonathan McAlpine’s top award of the night was the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award for a Tauriko home.
He also received a Resene Colour in Design Award and a Commended in the Residential New Home over 300m2 category for a country farmhouse on the hill in Welcome Bay, as well as a Commended for a weatherboard villa in the same category.
He was also Commended for his Ocean Beach Road project in the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 category. Maurice Regeer of MnM Design was also awarded a Commended in this category.
The Tauriko home’s winning interior design is inspired by natural elements that are described by the designer as ‘current and timeless’.
‘The interiors are a combination of organic materials and a modern interpretation of traditional design,’ McAlpine says.
Judges described the home as ‘tactile’ and noted the subtly lit cedar spine as ‘the main ordering device in a simple linear plan which is offset by neutral tones throughout the remainder of the house’.
Resene judges described Jonathan McAlpine’s use of colour as effective in boosting the masculine strength and power of his country farmhouse design in Welcome Bay.
‘The raw concrete and solid black beams demand the attention that they deserve.’
Matt Hodson of Insight Architecture was awarded a Commended for a Bethlehem residence in the New Home over 300m2 category.
ADNZ CEO Astrid Andersen congratulated the winners saying Bay of Plenty ADNZ members had once again produced examples of striking and impressive design.

‘In just two years of membership, Jonathan has received a fitting acknowledgement of his skills, talent and commitment to his craft.
‘Congratulations to all our winners – this year the standard and quality of design has been raised again and we are very proud of our members who contribute at this high level in the architecture and design industry,’ Andersen says.
Every year, the ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards recognise outstanding, creative and innovative residential, commercial, alterations and multi-use projects designed by ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand) members throughout New Zealand.
Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards are being held across the country from June through to mid-August in the lead up to the national awards.
National award winners and the Supreme Award winner will be announced on Friday 27 October 2017.

The brief was to create a home inspired by natural elements that was current yet timeless. The interiors are a combination of organic materials and a modern interpretation of traditional design. The home has a warmth and a presence that is captured in the details. As part of the design brief, the home had to be no greater than 200m2. It needed to integrate all spaces of a functional family home.
Judges’ comments:
This tactile home utilises a subtly lit cedar spine as the main ordering device in a simple linear plan. This is offset by neutral tones throughout the remainder of the house, achieving the brief which was to create a home inspired by natural elements.

Description:
A long meandering gravel driveway through forestry sprawls out to open grassed paddocks where stock graze. Nestled on the horizon line, this country farmhouse sits proudly with expansive views over Tauranga Harbour. The layout consists of a central glazed family area with children’s bedrooms, guest suite and carport to the West and master suite, services, garaging and loft space within the East wing. The home has been designed to connect the primary living spaces to the view, decks and pool area. Depending on weather conditions, the central courtyard also acts as a refuge with harbour views through the glazed living pavilion or rural views out to the southern countryside.
Resene judges’ comments:
Colour has been used effectively to boost the home’s masculine strength and power. The raw concrete and solid black beams demand the attention that they deserve.
